Cruz, Why Are You Offended by a Black Woman Supreme Court Justice?

The GOP keeps saying the quiet part out loud.

A few weeks back, Republican Senator Ted Cruz stuck his foot in his mouth, calling Biden's pledge to nominate a Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court "offensive" and "an insult to Black women." As a Black woman, I can say the only thing offensive about the whole scenario is Ted Cruz thinking he should speak on behalf of Black women.

America has never had a Black woman Supreme Court Justice. The only remedy for this egregious omission is for a President to nominate a Black woman. We don't have to agree with everything Biden says or does to understand that keeping his word by appointing a Black woman to the highest court is a good thing, not bad, and certainly not offensive.

Within Cruz's rhetoric, there is an assumption that Black women don't want to be singled out, that we don't want our identity to matter. And that's where his argument spun out of control. Black women want to be seen, and we want to be treated with respect and enjoy full citizenship and receive equal opportunities.
