How the Royal Family Lost Control to ‘The Crown’
The Netflix drama has shaped the perceptions of millions of people who previously knew little about the royals
Following Oprah Winfrey’s blockbuster interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the royal family is in damage control mode. After the couple talked about their strained ties with the British monarchy and the many instances of racism they were subjected to (including an unnamed member of the family’s “concern” with how dark their mixed-race son Archie’s skin might be), Buckingham Palace responded to the tell-all by reportedly holding a series of crisis meetings with its senior members. In his first public appearance since the interview aired, Prince Charles visited a majority-Black church, Jesus House (which is serving as a vaccination site in London), where he met with members of the staff and discussed their work in distributing the vaccine. He did not discuss the interview, but it was the elephant in the room.
Instead, it was the queen who addressed the controversy in a carefully worded statement released by Buckingham Palace, which read:
