If elected, Joe Biden will create a task force to locate the parents of 545 migrant children who were forcefully separated from their families more than two years ago. Thousands of families were split apart under the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance policy.
In his book Separated, reporter Jacob Soboroff explains how Trump officials were repeatedly warned that reunification would be nearly impossible due to the infrastructure of the U.S. immigration system. Trump implemented the policy anyway, before rolling it back due to massive public pressure.
Still, family separation remains an ongoing issue. “They might’ve stopped on a wide-scale, systematic basis, but the ACLU says over a thousand families have been separated since,” Soboroff told me in July.
