If there’s one constituency that absolutely abhors Donald Trump, it is older Black voters. That’s what writer Michael Arceneaux learned from listening to his mother, who he says can’t stop herself from angrily complaining about the president at every turn.

Arceneaux is not alone: Fellow Black friends and family members with loved ones over the age of 60 have been experiencing the same phenomenon as we inch closer to Election Day. The reason why is clear to Arceneaux. “Imagine surviving Jim Crow,” he writes, “and having to deal with White supremacy’s court jester in this stage of life.” No wonder his mom is full of rage. Can you imagine how exhausting it must be to watch Americans make the same idiotic mistakes over and over again?
