In Arizona, the Navajo Nation showed overwhelming support for Joe Biden. Apache, Navajo, and Coconino counties—all of which overlap with the Navajo Nation—gave 97% support to Biden (73,954 votes) compared with just 3% (2,010 votes) for President Donald Trump, according to the Navajo Times.
While punditry has focused on Biden’s success with Latino voters in the state, his performance inside the Navajo Nation has been even more stunning and is arguably just as much a rebuke of Trump and his inept pandemic response—which has been particularly devastating to Indigenous Americans—as it is an endorsement of Biden’s policies. The Navajo Nation, the largest reservation in the U.S., had at least 560 deaths from Covid-19—a higher death rate than any state.
