It’s Harder Than Ever To Vote By Mail In Texas

An administrative procedure with no administrative remedy? Sounds like voter suppression.

Texas is working hard to reduce voter turnout across its valiant and glorious state. New laws that come into effect this year include tighter regulations for people who desire to vote by mail. Apparently, they’ve taken the words of former President Trump to heart, and they’re very concerned about voter fraud. I guess the logic is that if fewer people can vote, there will be less voter fraud.

The procedure to apply for a mail-in ballot has been amended, updated for the latest trends in suspicious voting. But there is no remedy to fix an application if it should be found to be “deficient”. From the Washington Post:

Under the Texas law, ballot-by-mail applications must include a driver’s license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number. The identification number is then verified against the applicant’s voter registration record. If the numbers do not correspond, the new law requires that the application is rejected.

The Texas primary is one of the earliest in the nation, on March 1.
