Just Fire Chris Matthews Already

It’s shameful that the out-of-touch and misogynistic host is still on the air

EEvery so often, MSNBC host Chris Matthews reminds us why he shouldn’t still be on the air. This week, that moment came after the Democratic debate in South Carolina, when he asked Sen. Elizabeth Warren how she could be so sure that former mayor Mike Bloomberg had told a pregnant employee to “kill it” (an accusation that has been reported by the Washington Post and verified by another person who witnessed the conversation).

“You believe that the former mayor of New York said that to a pregnant employee,” Matthews asked her. “You believe he’s that kind of person, who did that?”

When Warren answered that pregnancy discrimination was real and wondered why she shouldn’t believe the woman, Matthews continued to dig in: “Why would he lie? Just to protect himself?”

The exchange continued on like this for a while — Matthews seemingly gobsmacked that Warren would be so confident in a woman’s word (along with that of the witness) over Bloomberg’s. It was, at best, tone-deaf; at worst, incredibly sexist.

Either way, it was just another example of Matthews’ inability to progress with the culture. And in a moment like this — when the…
