Keep an eye on Florida and North Carolina tonight. Because states are being inundated with mail-in ballots, final results will trickle in at a slower pace than usual. However, as the Washington Post’s Aaron Blake points out, Florida and North Carolina both have early poll closure times, and are both seen as key swing states in the 2020 election.

Elections officials in North Carolina estimate they could have 80% of the votes reported shortly after the polls close at 7:30. Meanwhile, Florida state law allows officials to begin counting mail ballots weeks before Election Day—unlike in other states, like Pennsylvania, that must wait until the polls close to begin their count. Given Biden’s overall polling lead, a good early showing in either state could be telling about his overall chances. Not to mention that securing Florida’s large cache of Electoral College votes would almost certainly guarantee him the nomination.
