Lawmakers Have Been Quiet About the New Amazon Union
My guess is, they’re not all that happy about it
As many of us have heard, on April 1st, 2022 an Amazon warehouse on Staten Island became the first in the United States to unionize, and with an independent union astutely dubbed Amazon Labor Union at that. David took on Goliath, and won. It is not an exaggeration by any means to suggest that what they accomplished is one of — if not the biggest — things to happen regarding labor in the United States in the nation’s history.
Perhaps that’s why so many of our lawmakers, the overwhelming majority of both Republicans and Democrats, have been so quiet.
Just hours before I sat down to write this, More Perfect Union’s Twitter account shared a link to their tracker about what lawmakers are saying and tweeted:
“UPDATE: Only 44/530 current members of Congress have commented on Amazon Labor Union’s victory. Zero Republicans have commented. Zero members of House Democratic leadership have commented.”
