The South Bend mayor had a target on his back during Thursday’s debate
Remember when @ReignofApril created the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite after all the Black and brown talent were snubbed from the Academy Awards? It was amazing that no one created #DemDebateSoWhite after seeing Thursday night’s debate.
There were only seven candidates on the stage for Thursday’s sixth Democratic debate in Los Angeles. Among that exclusive field, there were six white candidates and only one man of color, Andrew Yang. It was said by Senator Cory Booker, one of the handful of Democrats who did not qualify for the debate stage, that there are now “more billionaires than Black people in the 2020 race.” Indeed, this is what is absolutely wrong with our body politic right now. And until we decide to change how money works in politics, the diverse public servants that should be on stage won’t make it. As our demographics continue to shift in this country, the representatives that we have should look like the nation we are — not the one we once were.
