Supreme Court Ruling Shows the GOP Is Winning the Long Game

Republicans may have already won both the battle and the war for the judiciary

Republicans are better at politics. It’s not even a contest. They’re better at dividing and conquering their rivals when they’re in power. And when Republicans are in the minority, they’re better at obstructing the Democrats’ agenda. They’re better at appealing to and mobilizing their base. They’re better at closing rank and voting in lockstep when it comes to their core priorities as a party. Most importantly, they’re better at creating a long-term strategy and seeing it through to the end.

We saw the culmination of that strategy this week when the Supreme Court handed down a 5–4 ruling declaring Texas’s six-week abortion ban constitutional and functionally overturning Roe v. Wade.

In the wake of the court’s decision, there was a mass finger-pointing session among centrists and progressives, with the moderates chastising Bernie Sanders voters and the left faulting Ruth Bader Ginsburg for not retiring sooner.

Honestly, there’s a lot of blame to go around. At the end of the day, it boils down to this: The GOP had a plan, and Democrats did very little to stop them from carrying it out.
