As the saga over the Mueller report continues, so too does the disagreement among congressional Democrats over whether to hold impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Just last week, Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Al Green delivered a petition to Congress urging the impeachment of Trump, which they claimed was signed by more than 10 million people. Yet Democratic Party House leadership remains opposed to impeachment, even as they recognize the increasing tension between the two branches.

There are reasonable arguments both for and against impeachment, and not all of them are contingent on partisan politics.

The double-edged sword of impeachment

An impeachment would appease the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. A recent poll by PBS NewsHour, NPR, and the Marist Poll showed that 70% of Democrats favor impeaching the president. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs those Democrats to remain engaged and show up at the polls for Democrats in 2020. She might feel she needs to appease that segment of the electorate. After all, some people reason, what good is a party leader who won’t heed to the will of her constituents?
