The Way We Work Now is a series chronicling how people’s lives and careers have fundamentally changed because of the pandemic.

Justin is a twentysomething server in a conservative pocket of Palm Beach, Florida. He spoke to Mai Tran about returning to work in a state where Covid-19 cases have topped 870,000.

I started working at a family-owned bar and restaurant in Palm Beach County, Florida, in the beginning of March. When I got there it was already in the “we don’t really know what’s going to happen” stage. In mid-April, we got the order to go into lockdown, and…

‘When they walk into that booth, they have just as much power as the richest person in the United States.’

Two years ago, Floridians approved Amendment 4 to restore voting rights to most state residents who had previously served time for felony convictions. And although Republicans in the state tried very hard to undo that progress by requiring returning citizens to pay off outstanding court fines and fees before they could vote, thousands were able to vote this election season — including Desmond Meade, who spearheaded Amendment 4 as president and executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.

The president is dangling a Supreme Court nomination and disaster aid to get the votes of Florida’s Latinos, but will it work?

President Donald Trump is going the extra mile to capture Latino votes in Florida, hoping that the potential appointment of a conservative Supreme Court justice of Hispanic descent in combination with a series of key policy decisions affecting the community will earn him enough goodwill to help him win the state again.

Trump is currently considering nominating Barbara Lagoa, a Cuban American federal judge from Florida, to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the U.S. Supreme Court. A dark horse in the nomination process, she doesn’t have the name recognition or the same prized anti-abortion track record as…

Moments after entering the world, my daughter was put on a ventilator. I had developed a deadly illness during pregnancy — the only treatment for which was to deliver Layla three months early, way before her lungs had a chance to properly develop. And so my daughter needed breathing assistance for the first months of her life — ventilators, CPAP machines, and nasal cannulas. Every once in a while her oxygen would dip dangerously low and she would turn blue, machines blaring before a nurse would rush over to revive her.

Even after she finally came home from the hospital…

The Castro regime is responsible for undeniable atrocities. Generations of Cuban American voters will never forget this.

It was Grandparents’ Day at my high school in Tampa, Florida, about 18 years ago, and my Cuban American grandfather was explaining to my Spanish teacher how horribly expensive eggs were in Cuba.

This particular memory of my abuelo, who passed away in 2006, remained distant in my mind until this February when it suddenly came back to me along with a wave of nausea as my favorite presidential candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders, repeatedly highlighted the sunny side of the Castro regime.

At the Democratic presidential debate on March 15, held just days ahead of the Florida primary, Sanders refused…
