The Only News Parents Care About Is Their Kids’ Vaccine Eligibility

There is a lot of news going on in the world right now, as there always is, and how much it affects your life in many ways depends on how closely you decide to pay attention to it. California recall, the Texas abortion law, Afghanistan … it can feel overwhelming, and it’s a downright slow news drip compared to what we went through most of 2020.

But for most of the parents I know, there is only one news story that they care about, that they are focused in on with laser-like fashion. All other stories fade away, and that’s the only one that counts: When can we get our kids vaccinated? If you do not have children under the age of 13, if you are fully vaccinated, you can, while using caution, essentially walk around the world as normally as you feel comfortable doing so. But if you have kids who haven’t gotten vaccinated — as my wife and I do, with two boys aged nine and seven who live in ours house — you remain stuck. Your kids aren’t protected, there’s a chance they could be pulled out of school at any moment, and there’s absolutely nothing you do about it.
