The Pain of Biden’s Compromise

What’s in, what’s out, and how it feels to watch the federal government held up at gunpoint by two Senators who represent maybe 3% of the country

As President Biden announced that Democrats have a deal on a “framework” for the Build Back Better Plan, he praised Congress for their ability to compromise and reach consensus. “No one got everything they wanted,” he said, “including me. But that’s what compromise is.” He went on to say that, “I know how deeply people feel about the things they fight for. But this framework includes historic investments in our nation and in our people.”

The details are still to be worked out — including all of the legislative text — so we shall see just how historic it really is. But it reminded me of when my ex-boyfriend and I used to “compromise” on vacations. One year, he wanted to go to Europe. I wanted to go to Costa Rica. So we went to his parents’ house in Boca Raton. No one got what they wanted. Compromise got us an unhappy week of shuffleboard.

I see and support the President’s desire for comity and a willingness to come together to make policy that works for the vast majority of our people, especially after the shitshow of the last four years. He ran on “unity” and winning “the soul of the nation.” As of…
