Why is Trump so appealing to Latino men? Because they see him as a true macho—someone who fits the rigid notions of masculinity prevalent in the Hispanic community. The New York Times reported today that the president’s unapologetic, hypermasculine behavior and perceived financial successes are a big draw for male Latino voters who are more concerned about the state of the economy than they are for immigration or racism.
As I’ve written before, nearly 30% of Latinos are likely to vote for Trump in this election. We are not just talking about Cubans and Catholics in Florida. Support for the president in the Hispanic community is high among men in general and men without college degrees — just like in the case of white Republican voters. Discounting their power in crucial states would be a big mistake.
