The Trump administration will get away with cutting the 2020 census short, thanks to the Supreme Court. The legal fight over the timeline for the U.S. Census, which was upended by the coronavirus pandemic, has taken months. Now, the government will be able to end the fieldwork for the count by October 15 and likely exclude undocumented immigrants from its submitted tabulations.

The court decision is a blow to communities of color across the nation. Advocates say they are likely to be undercounted and, as a result, will be negatively affected by how federal funding will be allocated for the next 10 years. It will also dictate how political representation is distributed, which would allow the GOP to continue consolidating power.

The court’s opinion was unsigned, but in a scathing dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote: “The harms associated with an inaccurate census are avoidable and intolerable.” She’s damn right.
